As I look at Scripture, survey a bit of church history, and observe what happens to men who cross over into pastoral ministry, there are three entwined cords that bind a man to his call. Each thread strengthens the summons. These are his internal call, his preparation, and his confirmation by others—a threefold cord of calling. These aren’t consecutive steps; rather, they’re three independent strands that come together in God’s providence to help the summons find its fulfillment.
